How do I know if I should factor this or use the quadratic formula?

If you are an igcse student and you want a quick trick , you may use the calculator(mode 5 ,3) to solve the quadratic equation, if the answers you got where integers or fractions then you should factorize , if they are surds(roots) i.e square root of 2 , then you should use the quadratic formula
